I currently fly a passive shield tanked Myrmidon, but before I commit to skill training for a Battleship I wanted to consider other options than the Dommi. I have my T-2 Medium Drones and can live with that, but before going to T-2 Heavy Drones and I wanted to explore other options particularly before I begin training for whatever guns in the high slots my next ship (battleship) will have.
I am at the crossroads of a major decision in my skill tree progression.
Having gotten used to passive shield tanking (to include investing the time in skills for it)I have a particular interest in continuing to tank in that manner rather than switching to an armor tank where my skills are somewhat lacking.
I am still totaly open to the idea of a complete Racial Change in my choice of Battleships.

think about the nightmare if you are able to afford it :) it is like a marauder with laserguns and shield (active) tank! imho the best missionrunning ship... it sucks against guristas / angels a little bit but u can do that missions as well too!
it got 100% damage bonus on the 4 turretsslots 5% damagemodifier per level each Caldari BS skill 7 med slots for awesome tank 5 low slots for the gank and PDUs...
think about it... it is only a little bit expensive... just a little bit :)
I could actually afford it. I did pretty good on the market starting out as a noob and I am certainly going to look into the idea. Thanks for that.
My primary concern of course if I were to invest most of my Billion ISK fortune in a Nightmare would be how well such a ship is in SOLO level 4's efficiently and not just to maximize my ability to pay for itself, but in terms of how safe I could consider myself from any possibilities of disaster in the form of losing the ship in a level 4 mission.
Sure mistakes do happen. I lost my first Myrmadon in a level 3, but I made a very silly mistake and I don't blame the ship at all.
I had mentioned the Nightmare in another thread and someone made a point that sure the Nightmare does have that great damage modifier, but it also only has 4 slots instead of 8. In effect that makes it roughly the same in DPS as the other Battleships that are far less expensive.
It does sound like an awfully fun ship to fly though.
Could you perhaps elaborate on why you found it to be the best mission runner for level 4's?

Edited by: Sephra Star on 29/02/2008 08:37:48 How would I rectify a passive shield tank with it though?
My experience in passive shield tanking my Myrmidon is one of a Capless set up using Artillary and the Beam weapons on a Nightmare I thought would be very heavy on capacitor usage.
Another point. I am looking at it now and it has x6 High Slots, but only x4 turret points. No missile turret hardpoints at all.
What goes in the other two slots? I don't need a cloak for high sec mission running and a drone link range augmentor is nice, but not necessary really.

What are the other two high slots fit with.
I notice the Golem has a similar issue with its x4 Missile Hardpoints, but no turret hardpints for its extra high slots.

Originally by: Neddy Fox If you passive SHIELD tank a Myrmidon, with it's 7.5% ARMOR BONUS, and 20% more hitpoints on ARMOR, I'd best not give you advice :P
but ah well: If you want to passive tank LVL4's, and you have the passive shield tank skills, the Drake will just do!! no BS needed.
I have heard that before, but I can tell you from experience that a passive shield tanked Myrmidon is the bomb. It is perhaps the only ship you can ignore the armor bonus with in favor of a shield tank and still come out better doing it with.
I can solo quite a few level 4's in my Myrmadon as well as you can with a Drake, but neither the Drake, or the Myrm will do them all.
I want to be able to solo the big missions.

Originally by: Annowyn Maelstrom is best for speed in the active shield tank department.
You can choose damage types (to some extent, will always do a it of kinetic damage), allowing for easier rat killing in any missions. It has a 6 mid slot tank, but it also has a 7.5% bonus to shield boost amount, so you do not need to fit a shield boost amp (it is pretty much a 7 slot tank).
For the lows you can throw in 3 damage mods, 1 damage control, and 1 cap flux coil.
Shreads any mission you go into. No need to train for heavy drones for this ship as it only fits 75 mbits, so one flightof lights and another flight of medium drones.
8 turret slots so you get the mostout of every damage mod.
Even before reading your post I was surmising this may well be my choice in the end unless I decide to stick with the Dominix.
Althought the Nightmare sounds like the most fun.

Originally by: Gold Rogers The Golem and the other Marauders get a range bonus to tractor beams so you can salvage as you go.
I've just got a Nightmare I can fly it Sunday and I plan to put in two heavy faction nos to for now, to counter the blood raiders.
I am a firm believer in a dedicated salvage ship. I would go nuts not having 4 tractors and 4 salvagers to do it all at once and quickly after a mission. Particularly since I practice creation of a kill zone to aggro rats in before destroying them so the wreck field is consolidated.
Thanks for your NOS comment though. That answers two of my questions about the Nightmare. Extra Cap for the Beams and what to put in the other two high slots.
What Rigs generally go on a Nightmare?

I'm planning on CCC.
The setup i'm going to use (I have all the stuff it came to about 3.5b including the ship)
4 x Faction Megapuluse (They're the same stat wise) - For some missions i'll switch to Tachs 2 x Heavy Faction Nos (Once again all the same stat wise)
Gist A - Xlarge shield booster Gist A - Shield boost amp 2 x 59.5% EM hardeners 2 x 59.5% Thermal hardeners Cap recharger II
3 x Cap Flux coil II 2 x Faction heat sink (Once again all the same stat wise)
3 x CCC
I was going to Tech II fit but I figured since I spent so much on the ship it's self I should try to get the most out of it.
I missed an oportunity to get a Nightmare just yesterday that had all three CCC rigs on it and fully T-2 fitted all for 850 million.
Yes that set-up is certainly enviable.
Curious is this a dual purpos PvP-PvE ship, or just for missions?

Wow that's pretty cheap, I got the ship Monday and I paid 935m alone just for that.

I prefer to PvP in HACs and Recons, plus I don't have the nerve to risk that much isk in PvP if i'm needed in a battleship it will be an Abaddon or Geddon.
Why am I not surprised. I just finished reading about the Nightmare in another ongoing thread and is touted yet again as the best mission runner. (presuming your not going against Angels.)
